As an early learning academy we are academically focused and committed to a balanced approach to early literacy. As part of our approach to educating the whole child, we encourage activities that support oral language, letter knowledge and phonological awareness. These provide the foundation for learning to read and write, and are critical for supporting children’s early literacy skills. At Hilltop, we use literacy rich classrooms and a systematic approach to phonics. When a child understands and can break down and manipulate small sound units verbally, they are ready to transfer this knowledge to printed words and reading begins. Many of our students are early readers, a skill that research has shown leads to future school success.

STEAM Approach

In addition to encouraging early literacy, at Hilltop we are committed to developing a strong STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) foundation in our students. Using a STEAM approach in the classroom encourages development of higher-order thinking skills, which help us reason, think critically, and problem solve. These skills are encouraged in our classrooms through a variety of active, hands-on discovery, investigation and problem solving activities.
